Short description of ArtWeb Generator AWG (ArtWebGenerator) is intended to be used to document different types of collections. The program creates and publishes WEB pages from input images and other information. 1. Download the installer and verify the checksum. 2. Run the installer (java -jar AWGinstall.jar). Anyone who wants more control over this process may download "AWGinstall.jar/package/ArtWebGenerator.jar" which is the only file needed. The installer may also be used to perform uninstallation. 3. Launch ArtWebGenerator.jar (located under Windows Start) and create a new project. Feel free to use some of the built-in examples, e.g. File - NewProject - IndexToPagesSample, and select an appropriate location. 4. Generate WEB pages with Tools - Generate WEB project, and then View WEB. Your first WEB is now created! Note that the Project contains a number of Pages and each Page a number of Articles with images, text, links, etc. 5. Before adding your own images, it may be appropriate to familiarize yourself with the various settings available. For example, you can change different settings and see how it affects the WEB that is generated. Settings are available for Program, Project, Page, and to some extent for each Article. 6. Each Item to be described is represented by at least one image. It can be a picture of one painting or any other collectible. Alternatively, the Item may be a link to another Item, Page or Project. There are six special types of Items; ArtistDatabase (all Items sorted by author), Latest (Recently Added Items), Locations (all Articles sorted after Place where they are stored), All Text (All entered text, for easy searching), Values (Evaluation summary) and Separator(Text separator to add a comment or heading, for example). Add new Items with menus, "+" button, drag and drop an image to the list of Items or use "paste" from the context menu. Paste usually works directly from a WEB page. If the name is wrong, just change it via the context menu. The name of the artist will be selected from the file name. Consider that even though different Items must have different file names (eg by adding a number) the text which identifies the artist should be written in the same way for all Items by the same author (Select e.g. "First name Last name (Year of birth-Year of death)"). Descriptions of artists are saved in a common place, ArtistDB. To change the image, click on it and you can select from a list of existing images. It is also possible to drag and drop or paste a new image to replace the existing one. 7. Searching among Items can be done in many different ways. There is a search function that searches through All Pages of the Project. If you know the artist's name, you can select the menu Tools-ArtistDB and get a list with thumbnails that are links to the Items available for each artist. If you know on which Page an Item is located, you may select Page Thumbnails to find the right one. Browsing the list may also be enhanced by selecting an alphabetic sort (At this time, changes should be avoided while sorting is active). If the Item is acquired lately, the Latest thumbnail page may be useful. 8. The formatting is controlled with WEB templates. These are WEB pages with special keywords that determine where the entered data is placed. Which "tags" an template use is optional, if one is left out, the corresponding data or functionality will simply be missing. Under settings for a page, there is also some possibility to control how the formatting should be done, this mainly to avoid having too many variants of similar Templates. 9. The generated WEB may be published via File System, FTP or WDP (Windows Portable Device). WDP may be used for USB-connected mobiles, but with access to WiFi it is faster and easier to install an FTP app, e.g. TheOliveTreeSoftware Ftp server. The advantage of not publishing manually is that only modified files need to be copied. 10. To view generated WEB pages, you can select the system's default browser or the existing one built into AWG. The built-in works well for displaying generated WEB, but for some external sites one must be prepared for the fact that bugs may appear. A bit more about settings. A Page consists of a number of Items that share the same formatting. For each Page you can enter an Header and a Trailer that is entered via the menu "Page". Here you may enter any text that can also be html formatted. The AWG main window displays a list of images for the current page. For the Item that is currently selected, image and other data entered are displayed. When creating WEB pages, the Template format is repeated for all i mages and data. For each image, there is an option to choose what happens when you click on it. Possible choices are image (in full resolution), detail page, a WEB page, a Page in AWG, an optional file or no link at all. Remember to use references within the Project's WEB if it is to work after publication. For text under "Private", you may choose whether or not to include the text on the generated Web page. Under "Private" you may enter a date on the format yymmdd which is used to select the most recently acquired Items. Under "Value" enter an appropriate evaluation, that are summed up and displayed for the entire collection. Similarly, "Location" provides the ability to get a summary of where different items are stored. Finally, you may add links to other images or Web pages you want to refer to. The page settings are accessed via the Page menu. The most important concept to know here is to choose a template. For each template there is a text file with html code and an image file that shows an example of a page generated with the template. This is to facilitate the choice of template. There is also an "Introduction template" which can be used, for example, to add a link to the start page. WEB title indicates the title of the page. Many of the settings are about optimizing the presentation via network, but the same goes for a local server if a Page contains several hundred high-resolution images. Loading a Page is faster if you choose to generate images with more appropriate resolution than the original image. You can also choose to devide each Page into several WEB pages and e.g. number of images in width. The "Template Replaces" column displays the "overrides" specified in the selected Template. Such values are blocked as long as they are used in the current Template. For those with a definite idea of how the result should be formatted, it is possible to write your own Templates. To use this, you may select "external templates" under Program Options and place your own in the same place. Another way is to repackage the jar file with these extensions.
